Defining Specific, Meaningful Goals

Setting goals is a crucial step towards achieving success, but all too often, our goals lack the clarity and focus needed to truly propel us forward. That’s where the SMARTER goals framework comes in – a powerful tool designed to help you create goals that are Specific, Meaningful, Achievable, Risky, Time-Keyed, Exciting, and Relevant.

The Power of Specificity

The first step in the SMARTER framework is to ensure your goals are Specific. This means defining your objectives with laser-sharp precision, leaving no room for ambiguity. Instead of vague aspirations like “get fit” or “save more money,” craft goals that clearly outline what you want to accomplish, such as “lose 10 pounds by the end of the quarter” or “increase my monthly savings by $500.”

This morning, I’m talking about smarter goals, and how to make your goals actually smarter. And that smarter is an acronym that we can use to make our goals more achievable.

Hey, good morning, Coach Dave here. I just wanted to give you another short burst this morning. I’m talking about smarter goals, and how to make your goals actually smarter. And that smarter is an acronym that we can use to make our goals more achievable. Each letter stands for another key to making our goals smarter. The S in smarter stands for specific. We want to get down to the nuts and bolts. We want to make it specific and clear exactly what we are going to accomplish. M stands for both meaningful and measurable. Meaningful is that it’s important to us. It has to have some value. Why do we want to achieve this? Make it meaningful and make it measurable. How are we going to progress? How are we going to measure our progress? It is important that we make it measurable as well.

The A stands for achievable and actionable. We want some go words in there, some vibrant verbs so that, hey Coach Dave here, I hope you’re enjoying these videos. And if you are, I was wondering if you could do me a favor. If you don’t mind, just go below and like the video and subscribe to my channel. It’ll sure help me out. I greatly appreciate it. Thanks. We take action as we move forward. But we also want to make it achievable. It can’t be outside the realm of possibility. The R stands for risky. Now, this sounds a little strange, but we actually are more stimulated by making it just a little bit risky, pushing on that comfort zone, making sure that we are pushing the envelope. Make it risky.

SMARTER Goals: Timely, Exciting, Relevant – Your Path to Continuous Improvement

The T stands for time keyed and triggered, time keyed in that we have a deadline that we’re moving forward toward and that it’s triggered that we are taking action every day as, as appropriately.

The E stands for exciting and evaluate. We need to make our goals exciting. We can have some fun along the way, make it fun to make progress on your goal. Also, be willing to evaluate that progress, stay in the game, measure how much progress you’re making, but continually evaluate it so that you can make continuous improvement. The final R stands for relevant, make sure your goals are relevant.

In other words, are they in tune with your value system? And are they in tune with your stage of life and then be willing to readjust, readjust, be compassionate with yourself as you make progress but and readjust as appropriate, continue to make progress, continue to improve. That’s how you make your goals more achievable by making them smarter. Stay with another short burst for you. Hope you’re enjoying these, take care.

Meaningful and Measurable

Next, your goals must be Meaningful and Measurable. Meaningful goals are those that align with your core values and deeply resonate with you. They should feel intrinsically important, not just something you “should” do. Measurable goals, on the other hand, allow you to track your progress and celebrate your achievements along the way. Whether it’s the number of steps you take each day or the amount of debt you pay off, quantifying your goals will keep you motivated and focused.

Achievable and Actionable

While it’s important to dream big, your goals must also be Achievable and Actionable. Break down your overarching objectives into smaller, manageable steps that you can take on a regular basis. This not only makes the journey feel less daunting but also helps you maintain momentum and stay motivated.

Embracing the Risky

The “R” in SMARTER stands for Risky, and for good reason. Truly transformative goals often require us to step outside our comfort zones and take on a certain degree of risk. Whether it’s starting a new business venture or training for a challenging athletic event, embracing the unknown can be the key to unlocking your full potential.

Time-Keyed and Triggered

Time-Keyed and Triggered goals are essential for maintaining focus and accountability. Establish clear deadlines for your objectives, and then create a plan for taking consistent, actionable steps towards them.

This could involve setting daily or weekly reminders, scheduling dedicated time for your goal-related tasks, or enlisting the support of an accountability partner.

Exciting and Evaluative

The penultimate step in the SMARTER framework is to make your goals Exciting and Evaluative. Infuse your goals with a sense of joy and anticipation – visualize the positive impact they will have on your life, and find ways to celebrate your progress along the way. Additionally, regularly evaluate your goals and be willing to adjust them as needed. Life is full of unexpected twists and turns, and the ability to adapt and course-correct is essential for long-term success.

Relevance and Readjustment

Finally, your goals must be Relevant to your values, lifestyle, and current stage of life. Regularly assess whether your goals still align with what truly matters to you, and don’t be afraid to readjust them as your priorities shift. The SMARTER framework is designed to be a flexible, dynamic process, not a rigid set of rules.

One of the things that I have learned is that I got to eliminate that mood. And, you can eliminate that mood too by changing your emotional state.

Okay, Hey, Coach Dave here with you, just another short blast. And I have to tell you, I woke up this morning, and I just had a hard time getting moving. It seemed like it might be one of those days when I needed an extra cup of coffee. And I was kind of hesitant about a task that I needed to do, and I wasn’t quite sure how to proceed. And I wanted to give you a few hints today on how to overcome that mood that sometimes we get into that, we just don’t feel like moving. You know, and it’s sometimes it’s a mood, sometimes there’s a reason behind the mood.

But one of the things that I have learned is that I got to eliminate that mood. And you can eliminate that mood too by changing your emotional state. Hit go, no matter what your mood is. And you can do that by changing your emotional state, through how you hold your body, your physiology, your focus, what you’re focused on. And also, the language that you use, and the meaning that you bring to it. I’ll tell you, it makes such a big difference if you change your emotional state. And, it also helps to have a growth mindset. In other words, when we’re facing difficult tasks, when we find ourselves procrastinating sometimes it’s better to have a growth mindset. Thinking in terms that, hey, as I get through this, I’ll be better for it.

And one of the ways that is nice to be able to access is use deliberate play. Not deliberate practice, but deliberate play, make it fun, it’s an opportunity to grow an opportunity to improve. Another way that you might move yourself, get yourself to act quickly, is to shorten the deadline. There’s a principle that says, hey, our tasks will expand to fit the amount of time we have available to meet them. So if you shorten the task, sometimes that will get you moving. Now you have to be aware of where you are on the stress meter. So, if it becomes distressful, it’s not a good thing. And you have to compensate for that by adjusting for the stress. But, some stress that is useful is called used stress. So a little bit of us stress is good for us to accomplish our tasks.

One of the best ways that you can use to avoid procrastination and to start moving is to have systems in place. It’s some sort of routine that gets you moving, some causes and effects. Maybe it’s a morning routine or an evening routine. Don’t ever underestimate the systems that you have in place to get yourself moving. breaking those systems down looking at smaller chunks, and maybe the tasks that you haven’t had is too large for you do take a good chunk of at one time. And so you have to break it down and take little bites of it one piece at a time.

So break it down, use systems, have a growth mindset, shorten the deadline, and make sure you’re in a strong emotional state. Maybe you won’t need that second cup of coffee. I hope you’re enjoying these videos. If you are, please hit like and I’ll see you again tomorrow. Take care.

Surprisingly, one of the best ways to overcome procrastination is to shorten your deadlines. The principle is simple: tasks tend to expand to fill the time available. By setting tighter deadlines, you create a sense of urgency that can propel you into action. Just be mindful of not creating too much “distress” in the process – a little “eustress” (good stress) can be a powerful motivator.

Implement Effective Systems and Routines

Consistency is key when it comes to maintaining motivation and productivity. Establishing effective systems and routines can be a game-changer. Whether it’s a morning ritual, an evening wind-down, or a task-management system, having these structures in place can help you stay on track and minimize the mental effort required to get started.

Break It Down into Smaller Bites

Sometimes, the sheer size of a task can be overwhelming, leading to procrastination. When this happens, it’s important to break it down into smaller, more manageable steps. By tackling the project in bite-sized pieces, you can build momentum and avoid feeling bogged down by the enormity of the task at hand.

Harness the Power of Body Language and Focus

Your physical and mental state play a crucial role in your emotional state. By consciously adopting a confident, energetic body language and directing your focus towards positive, productive thoughts, you can shift your mood and mindset. The Language of Motivation

The words you use, both internally and externally, can have a profound impact on your motivation and emotional state. Be mindful of the language you use to describe your challenges and goals. The bigger the reasons, the more drive that you’ll have in accomplishing your goals.

Hey, Coach Dave, here again, just another short burst on wondering why you want these goals. Have you ever considered that? You must find out the reason. What reasons do you have for attaining this goal? Are they physical reasons like money or cars or a house? Or maybe they’re relationship reasons, a new friend, a better friend, or maybe their emotional reasons. Like, the wanting to connect with people or to contribute to other people. Or, just to grow to see if you can grow yourself into that bigger person.

And, they could be physical, emotional, or relational. Like, who will be there with you when you determine, or when you have succeeded in these goals? The bigger the reasons, the more drive that you’ll have in accomplishing your goals. We want to turn these goals and this reason why into a burning desire. And, we’re going to work on that in this section of our goal achievement process.

The simple truth is that the more profound and meaningful your reasons are, the more powerful your drive will be to accomplish your goals. Imagine, for instance, that your goal is to achieve financial freedom. Emotions can be so important in generating our actions to move forward toward our goals.

Hey, Coach Dave here again, with just another sharp burst. We’ve been talking about the reasons why we want these goals, what is driving us the reason behind what is driving us toward them? And, really it comes down to emotions. Yeah, emotions get a bad rap sometimes, but they’re such a vital part of us, acting, moving toward, or away from something. The dictionary definition is their mental states that are associated with thoughts and feelings, maybe behavior or responses.

And then, it measures a degree of either pleasure or pain. Just like we talked about earlier, these are our emotions. And, emotions can be so important in generating our actions to move forward toward our goals. Now we’ve talked about hey, some are pleasurable, some are painful, but emotions are what drive us to action. And it’s so important as we’re moving toward our goal, that we have some emotion behind it. That’s the fuel that we need to move forward. So, get in touch with your emotions, understand them, be aware of them. And, use them for the attainment of your goal, and for your goal achievement.

Harnessing Positive Emotions

Positive emotions, such as excitement, joy, and determination, can be powerful catalysts for action. When we feel these emotions, we are more likely to take the necessary steps to move towards our goals, as they provide the motivation and energy we need to overcome obstacles and persist in the face of challenges.

Transforming Negative Emotions

Negative emotions, such as fear, anxiety, and frustration, can also be leveraged for our benefit. While it may be tempting to try to suppress or ignore these emotions, doing so can actually hinder our progress. Instead, we can learn to reframe these emotions, using them as a source of fuel to drive us forward.

The Role of Emotions in Goal Achievement

Hey, Coach Dave here with another short burst. I sure hope you’re liking these short videos. We started to talk about our reason why we want to attain these goals. And we also mentioned about motivation, you know, avoiding pain and driving toward our pleasures. Well, now I want to go deeper into why we want these goals. And I want you to ask yourself, three, four or five times over and over again to go deeper. Why do you want this goal? What will it get you? And then, write it down, and then write it down again, 2345 times go deep.

This reasons these reasons why will be our fuel to get us moving to get us going. And, it will be the motivation that we need to attain our goals. And you know, this whole goal achievement process is that process of going from what’s in our mind, just an idea to what’s real. And that’s why we write it down. Writing it down is that first step, really, from transitioning to from the mental, to something physical. And it’s so important, you know, when we think it, and when we say it, it’s still an idea. But when we actually write it down, it becomes physical, and then review it every day. Coach Dave here with just another short burst. Emotions get a bad rap sometimes. But, they’re such a vital part of us acting moving toward or away from something.

Hey, Coach Dave here again, with just another sharp burst. We’ve been talking about the reasons why we want these goals. What is driving us, and the reason behind what is driving us toward them. And, really it comes down through emotions. Yeah, emotions get a bad rap sometimes. But they’re such a vital part of us, acting moving toward or away from something.

The dictionary definition is their mental states that are associated with thoughts and feelings, maybe behavior, or responses. And then, measure a degree of either pleasure, or pain, just like we talked about earlier. So, these are our emotions, and emotions can be so important in generating our actions to move forward toward our goals. Now we’ve talked about, hey, some are pleasurable, some are painful, but emotions are what drive us to action. And, it’s as important as we’re moving toward our goal, that we have some emotion behind it. That’s the fuel that we need to move forward. So, get in touch with your emotions, understand them, and be aware of them. And, use them for the attainment of your goal, for your goal achievement.
