What is motivation and why is it so important? Motivation is the force that drives us to take action or make changes in our behavior. It acts as a bridge between our mindset and our actions. Without motivation, it can be difficult to achieve our goals or make any meaningful progress.

Motivation really means, what is driving us to action or to change our behavior?

Hey, Coach Dave here, I just wanted to say a word today about motivation. Motivation is really kind of the linkage between our mindset and taking action or moving. Motivation really means what is driving us to action or to change our behavior. And there are two real foundational aspects of motivation. One is the desire for pleasure. And two, to drive away from pain to avoid pain. And that desire for pleasure is really can be very, very powerful to attain something that is our vision of the future. But, it’s been pretty well proven, that actually trying to avoid pain can be a more, a stronger desire.

So, there’s a beautiful video of Stefan curry, often called the baby faced assassin. He’s an NBA basketball player and after they won their fourth championship last year in 2022. And, it has him in the locker room, screaming now what are they going to say? Now? What are they going to say? He was out to fight that. And, that pain that he felt when critics were saying that they couldn’t do it.

The desire for pleasure and that desire to avoid pain, the two very strong motivations. We’ll talk more about motivations as we get into the next section on why we have the behaviors and the drive. And, how do we develop that drive for the things that we do that we really want? Talk to you again soon, bye.

The Two Foundations of Motivation

There are two fundamental aspects of motivation: the desire for pleasure and the drive to avoid pain. These two motivations play a crucial role in shaping our actions and behaviors.

1. The Desire for Pleasure

One of the most powerful motivations is the desire for pleasure. When we have a clear vision of what we want to achieve in the future, the prospect of attaining that brings us immense pleasure. It serves as a driving force that propels us forward, pushing us to take action and work towards our goals.

2. The Drive to Avoid Pain

On the other hand, the drive to avoid pain can be an even stronger motivation. The fear of experiencing pain or discomfort can push us to make changes, take risks, and overcome obstacles. It’s often in moments of adversity that we find the strength and determination to fight against the odds.

A Powerful Example

An inspiring example of the drive to avoid pain can be seen in a video featuring NBA basketball player, Stephen Curry. After winning their fourth championship in 2022, Curry was captured in the locker room, shouting, “Now what are they going to say?”

This outburst of emotion stemmed from the pain he felt when critics doubted his team’s abilities. The desire to prove them wrong and silence the naysayers became a powerful motivator for him.

Understanding Motivations

As we delve deeper into the topic of motivations, it’s essential to explore why we have certain behaviors and how we can develop the drive to pursue the things we truly desire.

The Link Between Mindset and Action

Our mindset plays a crucial role in determining our actions. A positive and growth-oriented mindset can fuel our motivation, making us more likely to take action towards our goals. On the other hand, a negative or fixed mindset can hinder our progress and hold us back from reaching our full potential.

Developing the Drive

So, how can we develop the motivation to pursue the things we want? One key aspect is setting clear and meaningful goals. When we have a clear vision of what we want to achieve, it becomes easier to stay motivated and focused.

Another important factor is surrounding ourselves with a supportive environment. Being in the company of like-minded individuals who share similar goals and aspirations can provide the necessary encouragement and motivation to keep going.

Additionally, celebrating small victories along the way can boost our motivation. Recognizing and rewarding ourselves for the progress we make, no matter how small, helps to maintain a positive mindset and keeps us motivated to continue pushing forward.
